Apps & Accessories for the iPad Idea Mapper – Part I

The first time I really tried to do something on an iPad was during an Idea Mapping Seminar that Jamie Nast was teaching in Livonia, Michigan – and I fell in love with the bigger iPhone. At the time the iPad was just coming out and no applications were yet written for Idea Mapping, so scanning an Idea Map in order to display it on the iPad was the norm; this was great because this new device really gave Idea Mapping freedom.

Since, a number of applications appeared for Mind Mapping or the bigger, better sister – Idea Mapping and they happen to run flawlessly on the iPad as well as on the iPod Touch and iPhone taking the new found portability yet to another level. However the original concept of scanning a Map created either by hand or with a personal computer was key, a kind of bridge between the written down on a piece of paper mind map, software designed idea map and the new medium.

So lets take a look at the most promissing of the new applications available:

iThoughtsHD an award winning software package found in the Apple App Store application will import and export mindmaps or ideamaps to and from many of the most popular desktop mindmap applications such as Freemind, XMind, Novamind, MindManager, MindView and iMindmap. But not only that – it also allows you to create maps with colored iconized topics and curved connector lines in multiple colors and  to attach notes like embedded hyperlinks, e-mail addresses and phone numbers directly to the map. A neat feature in iThoughts enables you to also link one map to another for expanding the original map or creating a larger map system.

iBlueSky appears to be one of the most fully developed mind mapping tools for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, featuring organic , curved connector lines, the ability to drag, arrange and edit items on the page, scroll, zoom and rotate the workspace and e-mail finished maps in NovaMind, PDF, PNG, OPML, text and Freemind formats.

I will continue the review of other software apps available in Part II of this post and as a great place for iPad Accessories I would like to recommend one of our own: The iPad Accessory Guru
